Move over Hallmark!

Tomorrow is Mother's Day.  You have probably been out looking for the perfect card like I have to express the feelings you have towards your mom.  Either the cards sound too sappy or too cold, like she's some sort of saint or that you're fulfilling an obligation of sending a card but have no emotional attachment to her at all.  I was frustrated because nothing sounded just right and conveyed the perfect message.

So, I decided to dedicate this blog to my Mom, to say to her all the things I couldn't find in any card but that needed to be said just the same.

Mom, you are my light...my earliest recollections are of you holding me and hugging me hard, squeezing the stuffing out of me.  I have always loved the softness of your face, velvety smooth to touch.  It seems to me that your face started out without many lines but the years have added layers of life, a portrait of having loved much, laughed much and cried much.  I am glad that you have aged gracefully because I cherish what those lines have meant through the years and you have given me a great gift...to be content with the "me" I am.

You are the craziest person I have ever met (and I've met a few)!  When Dad asked you if you wanted to learn how to ride a motorbike you didn't think twice and jumped on, only to realize you should have paid more attention to the "lesson" part before careening down into a ditch and flipping the thing over.  Your enthusiasm to try new things was infectious even if it meant that you didn't look dignified and stuffy and I thank you for the gift of enthusiasm to try some wild things because experiencing life sometimes means you're going to get dirty or hurt ~ but what a ride!

Your deep heart for God taught me how to pray and to this day I cry when I pray as I heard you do throughout the years.  I finally understand what it means to intercede on behalf of my children as you did and still do, to weep for them, to be joyful for them and to ask above all for the Prescence of God to be with them in their lives.  What an incredible gift you have given me to know God.

I think I am the most proud of you for the struggles you have had in your life because that is where your true beauty lies.  Everything that you have dealt with was an opportunity to get closer to God, an opportunity to learn and grow.  You are not a quitter, rather, when things got tough...you started making Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies!   Those were the BEST by the way, but your strength has been in your softness and your ability to adapt, forgive and move on.

So, momma dearest with the bluest, blue eyes...my love for you is deep and profound.  I know I don't always express it like I should but I give you this gift today after all the gifts you have given me because you deserve to know how much you mean to me.  And yes, I did buy you a cheezy card..let's go make some cookies!!  Love from me xoxo
